­^¤åºK­nBritish scholar Paul Wells argues that Horror is the film genre which can best reflect human fear and anxiety. For him, among its sub-genres, psychological thriller can best indicate psychological wounds. In ¡§Wit(h)nessing Trauma and the Matrixial Gaze,¡¨ Bracha L. Ettinger contends, splitting is the basic and inevitable model of subjectification. So, what is the main cause of split subject in contemporary age? For Marlene Steinberg, among the contemporary psychological epidemics, Dissociation is the most common kind. It occurs while subject can¡¦t cope with the reality. In order to overcome such trauma, subject would assume a new self¡Xa kind of splitting that makes subject carries two identities, which is called Dissociative Identity Disorder. This dramatic process is often adopted in literature and films. For literature, the earliest work about Dissociation is Robert Louis Stevenson¡¦s The Strange Case of Dr. Jykell and Mr. Hyde in 1886. Rouben Mamoulian¡¦s adoption, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in 1931, is thus the first film about Dissociation. Such plot about splitting sets up an example and offers later directors a sample plot device for presenting an unexpected twist in the end of story. As filmmaking technique improves, adopting and making such plot anew challenges contemporary directors. This thesis focuses on presentations of split subject in contemporary films, especially ones from 1999 to present. Darren Aronofsky¡¦s Black Swan, Martin Scorsese¡¦s Shutter Island, and David Fincher¡¦s Fight Club are chosen for careful discussions. By adopting psychoanalysis, sociological theories and poetics of cinema, I would like to probe the main cause of split subject in contemporary age.
For plot in these three films, all directors adopts the concept of ¡§first-person plural¡¨ to present their protagonists. In these films, while split consciousness of those protagonists surfaces in the so-called symbolic order, it¡¦s embodied with appearances of two characters in the same protagonist. That is, he/she becomes a person with two voices and bodies. In Black Swan, as the protagonist, the daughter, can¡¦t resolve Oedipus complex¡Xshe has an ambiguous relationship with her mother yet she endures the absence of father, she fails to develop her identity and find a proper place in the symbolic order. Such failure foreshadows the birth of her split subject, which appears in her pursuit for artistic perfection. Then, in Shutter Island, the protagonist, an officer who witnesses and even participates in massacres and suffers from Post-traumatic stress disorder, kills his depressed and parricidal wife. In order to protect himself from confronting such trauma, he makes up a story that he is not the murder and even promises his wife to catch that murderer. Not until his stay in a total institution¡Xshutter island¡Xdoes he uncover the fact that he is who he looks for, which forces him to receive lobotomy for reclaiming his autonomy. Finally, in Fight Club, the split subject is embodied via the protagonist¡¦s pursuit of self. While he feels panic due to his identity erasure in a society of consumerism and capitalism, he decides to wake his sense of self. For him, to experience physical pain is to fight against the boredom of life and to root out the base of economic institution. Through the pain of his body, he attempts to create a sacrificial self for getting his original self back.
In these three films, all protagonists clue us to understand why split subject appears via their life circumstances and their pursuits. The network these characters involve in¡Xa triad-structured family, an enclosed total institution and a multiple yet complicated consumer society¡Xprovides us a starting point. Then, ¡§the objet petite a¡¨ they seek for better portrays why they split: perfection which completes the concept of beauty, a lie which builds up an imaginary world to the pain which wakes up the sense of existence. So to speak, by presenting Dissociation via three different types of split subject, these three films express a universal psychological phenomenon in contemporary age: when repetitive return to trauma is the fate of contemporary subject, to dissociate oneself is the only way to dissociate one from his/her trauma.
